J Louis Lategan was born in 1961 and grew up on the family owned Makalali Game Reserve (now a conservancy) www.makalali.com. This Big 5 area is located in the North Eastern part of South Africa bordering the world famous Kruger National Park. Hunting was just about an every day occurence in this area due to management of game, problem animals and domestic hunts.

In 1977 trophy hunting became popular in the area and J Louis Lategan with his father started guiding various outfitters with foreign trophy hunters.
